In this short article you will learn:

Is a used car warranty really worth the investment?

What should I consider when looking for a used car warranty?

Is the used car warranty from the dealer the best deal I can get?

In my opinion, used cars work out the best value for most people dollar for dollar. But even when you have bought one, for some people there is always that nagging doubt in the back of their minds, wondering if the car will break down. There is one way you can alleviate that fear. A used car warranty.

The problem is most of you aren’t used car warranty specialists. Most of you haven’t purchased a used car warranty before. If you have purchased a used car warranty, it was probably from the dealer who told you it covered “everything” and flashed a quick salesman smile before he changed the subject.

Is A Used Car Warranty Good Value For The Costs

So, on to the first question. Is a used car warranty really worth the investment? As with most things in life the answer could be yes or no depending on what you buy.

If the used car warranty you end up purchasing has extremely limited coverage, then chances are that if something breaks it will not be covered. In this case, the warranty was a complete waste of money.

This brings me to my first point.

Just as with a home or a computer or anything else, you should always purchase the best used car warranty you can possibly afford.

Yes, a used car warranty is worth the investment…..IF you buy the right amount of coverage from the right company. What is the right amount of coverage? Re-read the paragraph above…..you should purchase the best used car warranty you can afford!

Now let’s look at the second question: What should I consider when looking for a used car warranty?

This is a very important question. Most of you will first think “price”. If you are one of the few who did not think price was the most important part of the used car warranty then you are ahead of the game already. Remember, if you get the cheapo used car warranty and it doesn’t cover most of the expensive parts that break down then you have wasted your money.

What To Look For In Used Car Warranty Plans

First, you want to take a look at the used car warranty coverage. At a minimum you want your complete engine, transmission and axles covered.

If these aren’t covered completely, forget it. In addition, you should also have coverage on your suspension and cooling systems as these break frequently also.

Another thing to consider is the financial stability of the company. If they sell you a five year used car warranty and then go belly up after two years, I’d say you just threw away that money.

Warranty Gold stopped paying its claims in 2004 when its insurer based in the Cayman Islands closed up shop and there are still people floating around trying to sell their used car warranties!

Don’t buy from just anybody and make sure the company you are working with is stable and financially secure.

Third question: Is the used car warranty from the dealer the best deal I can get?

In short….no. Not even close. Most dealers will sell you a used car warranty that they have purchased from a third party that you can deal with yourself.

They then mark up that used car warranty as much as 100%.

Do yourself a huge favor and just buy the warranty on your used car directly from the company. The warranty company can usually finance the purchase and you will save a whole lot of money.

So, my three pieces of advice from this article are these:

Always buy the best used car warranty you can afford

Learn a little bit about the company before you buy

Buy direct from the source. Never buy your used car warranty from the dealer.

Imagine that you finally got that important job interview, but became stranded on the road while on your way. Putting off buying an auto warranty or an extended auto warranty for your used car to save money on auto repairs can actually cost hundreds or thousands in the long run. In this case, it may just cost you an opportunity to get a job. What if you need your car to get to work on time, or use your car for work, or even for an emergency…..and it will not start? No auto warranty in place means you’re not going anywhere.

No one likes to make excuses for their broken down vehicle. Even worse, none of us can afford a huge automotive repair bill that comes on suddenly. These types of unexpected expenses drain an already tapped savings account, if there is any. Most of us do not plan for these types of problems. But all of us should.

No one likes to pay for extended auto warranties.

But, it is money spent in case something may or may not happen. Most of us would like to think nothing ever will. The problem is that as our automobile gets older, the wear and tear will take a toll. And so we go on and on, and one day, we notice it has been years since the car got a tune up. Now, it becomes a major repair. Or worse, we are forced into an unexpected expense because the car breaks down.

Can you get a loan to pay for auto repairs?

In the economy we have today, it is not wise to pay unnecessary interest payments or put yourself into a desperate situation such as this. Instead, be proactive with how you spend your money. Consider the extended auto warranty for your used car or truck. Look at the cost of repairs. Take into consideration the lost time from unexpected delays or the amount of time your vehicle is in the shop.

The extended car warranty is more affordable than you think. And most of the extended auto warranties will cover your car way beyond the life of the vehicle. When you have the best extended automobile warranty, you can plan ahead for repairs. You can also prepare for backup transportation instead of being stranded. Imagine the relief you will feel when you are protected in this way. Not only do you get a break on cost, but now you can relax because you are prepared.

Without a car warranty, you are at risk of becoming a victim of the rising costs of repair.

The average auto repair technician has over $10,000 invested in his own tools. The shop where he works may own thousands of dollars worth of service equipment. And time is money, so labor costs are usually between $60 and $90 per hour. An extended car warranty allows you to put aside a small amount gradually to cover for these costs. If you plan on keeping your vehicle instead of buying new, an extended warranty for your car makes sense. If you plan on buying a new car, tyou really must think about investing in an auto warranty at the same time

Many extended auto warranty companies are fly by night jokers. But the best auto warranty companies can save you up to 60% in many cases. Review the coverages and compare the rates. Be an informed shopper. Getting an extended warranty for your used car is simple online. Save time and money, and a lot of trouble, by looking into the coverage options that you have now, before it is too late.

When you buy your new car, you may have gotten a little caught up in the excitement of your new purchase, and maybe you didn’t pay all that much attention to the auto warranty services that were presented to you. But now you’ve had your car for a few weeks, and you have started to wonder – if something goes wrong with my fabulous new car, will it be covered under my warranty? What exactly did I get? And should I have turned down that extended auto warranty so quickly?

The first thing you’ll want to do is sit down, and read through your current warranty information. Yes, it’s not exactly an exciting read, but it needs to be done. There is information in this document that you will need to know. Things like the length of your manufacturer’s warranty, the number of miles you can drive before it expires, and what exactly is covered.

Is it bumper-to-bumper? Drive train only? And what maintenance and other services need to be performed in order to stay qualified for repair work? These are pieces of information that will be vital to you, if you plan to own your car for a long time. If you are unsure of any of these points, or you have more questions, don’t be afraid to call the dealership, and ask them to go over the auto warranty coverage with you.

As for that extended auto warranty that the dealership offered, don’t worry too much about it… yet. You can always pick up an extended warranty at a later time and date from a third party company. For now, you’re covered by the policy that came with your new car, and adding an extended warranty won’t make you any safer. It would be like wearing two gloves. However, as you get closer to the expiration date of your manufacturer’s warranty, you will want to start to keep an eye out for some reputable extended warranty providers, and start comparing prices and coverage. Remember that not every company will offer the same experience, and just because something was replaced for free by your old warranty doesn’t mean that a new, extended auto warranty will cover it as well.

So go out and enjoy your new car. You have auto warranty services that will protect you in the short term, as long as you keep up your end of the bargain, and keep your car well maintained with regular service visits. Remember that there’s nothing scary about a service visit, especially while your car is under warranty. You will pay for the regular oil changes and services, but anything else will be covered by your extended auto warranty services.

Since 2005, Gregory Nelson and his company, Motor Vehicle Services, has helped over 11,000 car owners protect their vehicle and gain financial peace of mind.

We are all our own worst enemies where auto warranty coverage is concerned. Human nature dictates that we will be unable to follow instruction or read documents fully at least 50% of the time. Let’s be fair as well that problem increases to 75% if you are a man! But auto warranties are notoriously complicated beast and they seemed designed to try and catch you out and wind you around in legal speak. But this isn’t always the case and there are a lot of reputable auto warranty companies out there. So let’s have a good look at the main points you should check, by reading and by asking.

Of course, what is and isn’t covered may depend on what type, make and model of car you have, along with the age and mileage on the same. There will always be waivers or limitations and many of these relate to specific components or parts, so eyes down now

I will now leave it for Gregory Nelson to take it from here. His company Motor Vehicle Service is very experienced. This extract comes from his article:

Auto Warranty Coverage – What Will They Repair or Replace?

…. in general, there are some things that are universally covered by warranties.

Engine Warranties:

This will be covered, no matter if it’s a manufacturer’s warranty or an extended warranty, but don’t assume that everything under the hood counts as an “engine” part. Things that are considered “consumables” aka items that wear out, like fan belts, are usually not covered. But should a major engine problem arise that is not due to misuse, lack of care or other negligence, the warranty will cover the costs of replacement or repair.

Warranty on Transmissions

This is considered part of the drive train, and again, will be covered in both situations. Don’t expect to have repairs done if the damage is caused by misuse or accidents – if you dent the tranny pan, it will be your insurance that covers the repairs, not the warranty.

Warranty Parts and Labor:

This is generally covered under both plans, as it pertains to repairing or replacing other covered items. That does not include an oil change.

Front/Rear Wheel Drive and 4×4:

Any damage done that was due to faulty parts here will be covered under most warranty programs.

Air conditioning: It may be a luxury addition to your new car package, but if something fails, your warranty will cover the costs of blowing cold again.

Brakes under Warranty:

Again, there are lots of consumables in your brake assembly. Don’t expect normal wear to be replaced on your brake pads, rotors or shoes. However, if another problem causes uneven wear, you may get replacements under your warranty program. Check the fine print.

There are plenty of other items that may be covered under your warranty, including electrical problems or shorts, any failures in the seals and gaskets, and so on. Some programs will also offer incentives and assistance for the time while your car is out of commission. This could include things like emergency transportation cost reimbursement, loaner rental costs, and any number of roadside assistance programs. Of course, the only way to know for sure what is covered under your auto warranty coverage is to read it for yourself, and make sure you understand what your responsibility is.
